Cloud Save Hoarders Beware – GOG Is Deleting Oversized Saves

Just a quick warning here on this outrageously cold Thursday morning: At the end of August, GOG is going to start deleting cloud save files that exceed the platform’s 200MB per game limit.

Deleting cloud saves isn’t great, but at least it’s better than the news of people losing their jobs, which I usually cover. So, to make sure we’re all on the same page here:

Cloud saves are a handy way to store your saved files remotely instead of on your device. This means it’s a great way to access your game and progress across machines and ensure you don’t lose more than your sanity if your hard drive fails.

Addressing their decision to start making gamers’ lives just a bit more complex, GOG had this to say:

As the size and number of games increase, so does the demand for Cloud Storage.
These limits ensure that all players have access to sufficient and manageable space for their game progress and that we keep the associated costs under control.

By optimizing our storage allocation, we aim to continue providing a reliable and user-friendly platform for everyone.

For those who might not know the state of their GOG cloud saves (and who does?), GOG has a management page that shows you which games are the biggest hogs and allows you to delete saves before GOG takes matters into its own hands.

I understand that GOG cannot let you save files on their servers indefinitely, but 200MB isn’t much.

Steam has a similar limit in place, but instead of being a blanket limit like GOG, Steam gives users a different limit from game to game.

It’s also odd that GOG has already had this size cap in place for years but has never enforced it until now.

There is a slight silver lining for those reading this and starting to stress about the state of their Cyberpunk 2077 saves: GOG won’t just remove all oversized saves in one go.

GOG has said that they will start the purge with the oldest oversized saves and then continue forward in time until the allocation limit is hit.

But now I want to hear from you: using the GOG management page, which is your biggest cloud save hog? Let me know in the comments.
