Ron Gilbert is a name you should know, but if you don’t, you’ll know his work. He is the man behind iconic games like Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, and, more recently, Thimbleweed Park.
This video game history lesson is relevant to stress how exciting this news is: Ron Gilbert is working on something new and completely different.
While this upcoming game is unnamed, Terrible Toybox, Ron Gilbert’s website, refers to it as “classic Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park.” I’ve never needed a game more.

Little else has been shown of the upcoming game other than the screenshots used in this article and some rough sketches.
However, recently, Ron Gilbert did talk to PC Gamer about the project and said:
I have been working on it for a year or so. Like a lot of early prototypes, the game has slowly morphed into what it is now.
I recently hired an artist and that really got things moving. I suck at art. It’s the game I always wanted to play and I got tired of waiting so I decided to build it.

As of writing, there isn’t a firm release date for the game yet, and if a quote on the Terrible Toybox website is anything to go by, we will have to wait and see.
The new game will be out in late 2024, or maybe early 2025, this is gamedev after all.
But now I want to know if you’re as excited as I am for a new game with Ron Gilbert at the helm. Let me know in the comments.
