Suppose you’ve been living under a rock in the middle of Mordor, perhaps hoping for some short, hairy-footed creature to drop a fancy piece of jewellery. In that case, you may have missed the announcement for the animated Lord of the Rings film The War of the Rohirrim, which was announced back in 2021.
Three years on, and while bits and bobs of news have surfaced, today marks the first time we actually get to see a little of what we can expect from the film as Warner Bros releases some concept art.
Just days after Warner Bros. announced “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for a Gollum” as a new live-action film for 2026, Rohan has mustered its forces for an epic first look at “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim”: https://t.co/YtTe1Tow9q pic.twitter.com/WvTTZ2F6tj

We know that the movie will take place around 180 years before the original trilogy and will feature Helm Hammerhand, the namesake for Helm’s Deep and a king of Rohan, attempting to defend the kingdom of Rohan from an army of Dundelings, or the Wild Men of Dunland.
The images tease tense battles and a lot of action as we see Helm himself standing atop a pile of frozen bodies and massive Wild Men armies with Mûmakil at their side.
We’re expecting big things from this animated film, as the team behind it also worked on the original trilogy and has taken much inspiration from Peter Jackson’s films. Even Miranda Otto returns to her role of Eowyn.
The film is planned to hit US cinemas on the 13th of December this year, and we should see it locally around the same time, but it is said some lucky few will get a pre-screening of the film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.
