Animal Well Is The Next Metroidvania Burning Up Steam

In a move I never saw coming, one of the best-reviewed games of the year so far has just launched on Steam today. Instead of being a big AAA title, it’s a small 2D Metroidvania that debuted with very little fanfare behind it.

Animal Well is a game that critics say may be one of the genre’s best. The review scores back that statement up: Eurogamer gave it a 5/5, GameSpot gave it 90, and GamesRadar gave it a 4.5/5. Animal Well is coming in like it already owns the space.

The game was developed by Billy Basso, a solo indie developer, and took seven years to complete. It’s also the first game to be published by Bigmode, a company founded by YouTubers to publish “some of the best games out there.”

Just hours after its debut, Animal Well is already climbing the charts and is the eighth most-sold game globally. On its Steam page, the developer boldly states that players will discover hidden puzzles in Animal Well for years to come.
