Western Digital’s Sandisk just dropped the 8TB desktop SSD of your dreams

Sandisk, acquired by Western Digital in 2016, just announced its latest storage product aimed at content creators, video editors, animators, engineers and anyone needing more backup space than they care to admit.

The 8TB Sandisk Desk Drive is an external drive and the company’s highest-capacity external SSD drive to date. A 4 TB version will also be available for those who require slightly less storage space. Both variants weigh just under 270g and require USB-C and a power supply to function. There’s even a Kensington security slot so you can keep your drive secure where you left it.

“As digital content creation continues to soar, there is an increasing need for high-performing and high-capacity storage solutions to help manage and preserve it. Expanding our SSD portfolio is the first step in offering creators backup solutions that deliver the speed and flexibility they need to unlock their creativity,” says Susan Park, Vice President, Consumer Solutions, Western Digital. “By next year, we expect to double the capacity of the SanDisk Desk Drive from 8TB to 16TB on a single desktop SSD.”

Western Digital says the drive is ideal large 8k video files and supports read speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s. To help you use it as a backup drive, a copy of the popular backup software, Acronis True Image is also included in the box. It’s also confirmed that this drive will work with both Windows and macOS and comes preformatted in with the exFAT file system, in case you were curious.

The Sandisk Desk Drive is expected to land in South Africa at the start of the third quarter. Local pricing for has yet to be announced.
