Content Warning is Steam’s next big hit. After giving away 6 million copies, it sold over 700,000 copies on Steam in just a few days.
Now, you may be asking yourself what I’m on about, so to catch you up, on April Fool’s Day, indie game studio Landfall made a deal with players: Content Warning would be free to claim for 24 hours, after which Landfall would start charging $8.
Content Warning is a simple horror game that challenges friends to record scary videos and make them viral on SpöökTube.
Giving it away for free was a massive hit, and over 6 million copies were claimed during the free period. This response was entirely unlike what Landfall CEO Wilhelm Nylund had experienced or anticipated.
It felt likely that Content Warning would be bigger than any of our similar small projects, but we definitely didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.
It was definitely a lot of excitement and a lot of confusion about how it blew up as quickly as it did.
Although excited about the roaring success of the free key campaign, the team at Landfall were a bit apprehensive that nobody would be interested in picking it up once the $8 price tag kicked in.
However, it seems that wasn’t the case, as the game has already sold over 700,000 on Steam in just a few days.
We all had this feeling that there’s so much at stake tonight when the game goes paid.
But then we started refreshing our sales figure page. And in its first few hours, the numbers were reassuring. We were like, okay, okay, we can relax. -Wilhelm Nylund
But now we want to know: Have you tried out Content Warning yet? Let us know in the comments.
