The PlayStation Portal Stunted By Its Own Engineers

For the briefest of moments, the PlayStation Portal was more than just a PS5 streaming device. It was the PlayStation Handheld we had all been dreaming of: an upgraded PSP.

Two engineers behind the PlayStation Portal discovered an exploit where they could install PSP emulation software and natively run PSP games on the device without streaming them from the home console.

Unfortunately, Andy Nguyen and Calle Svensson turned themselves in and showed PlayStation the exploit, causing the release of the PlayStation Portals’ latest firmware update, 2.06. This patch has within it the means to fix the exploit, setting the PlayStation Portal back to its original purpose.

Nguyen said they turned the exploit in because if it had been leaked somehow, PlayStation would have jumped on it in a hot second and fixed it quicker than you could say “Play Has No Limits” anyway.

While this exploit has been hot-fixed, it does mean that there could be others still lingering behind the scenes that we may see pop up as the device makes its way into tinkerers’ hands.

We’re currently playing with the PlayStation Portal at the NAG offices, so keep your eyes on our page for the full review, coming soon.
