Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for punishment. I mean, I do play quite a lot of League of Legends, but there is something about RTS survival games that just gets me all sweaty in the palms.
The latest one on my radar is Cataclismo, an RTS fortress defence game being developed by Digital Sun, the same studio that brought us the fantastic Moonlighter and one of the Riot Forged games, Mageseeker.
Cataclismo was initially announced last year and successfully garnered enough funding via a Kickstarter campaign to build itself from the ground up. The game is now preparing to launch on Steam and GOG just over a year later.

Besides the waves and hordes of horrors that I plan to slaughter at the foot of my fortress walls, I am also excited about the construction system that the game uses.
Instead of just placing a wall here or a defensive tower there, you will have to build each defensive structure block by block, adding a real creative and strategic element to the classic “tower defence” games we’re used to.
This block-by-block system also means that if your supports fail, the whole building will crumble down, squishing anything it falls upon.
I admit I have lost the final level of the demo three times now because of how distracted I got trying to build elaborately beautiful defences. That’s ok, though. I need something to keep me busy before the full game release on the 16th of July.
The full release is said to feature over 20 hours of playable campaign, a skirmish mode, a creative mode and a survival mode.
You can wishlist the game over on Steam here or GOG here, so that you don’t forget to insta-buy this one when it releases.
Ok, that’s enough hype. I’m heading back to the demo to give my dream castle another swing. Let’s just hope I remember to keep my foundations strong.
