The PlayStation Portal Is Now Available In South Africa

Remember back when Sony announced Project Q? Well, that would go on to be renamed The PlayStation Portal, and it’s now officially available for you to add to your PlayStation collection in South Africa – if you have the cash, that is.

The PlayStation Portal is Sony’s latest attempt at entering the handheld market, but instead of being a standalone device, the PlayStation Portal is a remote-play aid that comes with an 8″ display and an R5,499 price tag.

If you’re wondering what the PlayStation Portal offers for that price, it’s the ability to play your PlayStation 5 games without being tethered to your TV screen.

To make use of the PlayStation Portal, you will need both a PlayStation 5 console and a stable WiFi connection and then you’ll be able to connect remotely to your PlayStation 5 over WiFi, giving you the option of taking your favourite console games to the toilet or onto the patio with you… provided your WiFi reaches.

It’s worth noting that the PlayStation Portal will only allow you to play supported games already installed on your PlayStation 5 and that use the Dualsense controller.

Some other restrictions are that you can’t share your screen while playing, use share play, watch any Blu-Ray movies or play any games that require peripherals, such as VR games.

It’s also not really a load-shedding-friendly device because your PlayStation 5 needs to be on and running while you’re using the PlayStation Portal.

In other words, the best way to think of the PlayStation Portal is as a second screen, specifically for your PlayStation 5 console, that offers you some leeway on where in your house you can play your favourite PlayStation 5 titles.
