After almost a decade of work, this January saw Daggerfall Unity, objectively the best version of the Bethesda RPG, finally released to the world.
And now, with that giant project behind him, creator Gavin Clayton has announced that he is hard at work on an original Daggerfall-style game of his own. In an interview with DualShockers he said:
“I’ve already started working on a new game, but it’s going to be something of mine this time. I do genuinely love that old style of game.
The thing I’m building is in the same vein. You’re talking big world, complex systems, mod support, that’s all of the stuff I want to explore, and I want to take that experience of Daggerfall Unity and put it in the new game.”

Gavin Clayton will work on this new project full-time and move away from Unity to his own game engine, one he started working on long before Daggerfall Unity. While there are few details about his new project, he has stated that the world and story will be rooted in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign he ran for friends in the 1990s.
However, fans of Daggerfall Unity shouldn’t get too excited yet. Gavin Clayton went on X to confirm that while he is working on the project, he is still in the early tech stage and isn’t ready to make any formal announcement yet.
As this has been picked up a few times after my recent interview and I've had some enquiries, I should say that I'm not ready to announce anything firm yet and I'm still really early in tech stage. I'm also planning to start at a smaller scale and build up as I find my feet. https://t.co/upt933shLP

This new project also doesn’t signal the end of Daggerfall Unity. Clayton has said that the plan is for Daggerfall Unity to transition into a community-led project with the help of contributor kaboissonneault.
“Kab is one of the core contributors to DFU and highly active in its mod scene and community. Kab is also looking for people to help review and test PRs on git, so get in touch with him if that’s something you have the experience and can help with.
Kab will be leading the charge to 1.1 release of DFU. There are more bugfixes and mod features coming in the near future.”
Are you excited about this yet-to-be-named project? Let me know in the comments.
