A fan project will rear its head every couple of years, showing off a remake of a classic RPG using one of Bethesda’s new and shiny engines. From Skywind to Skyblivion, these projects are always stunning and overly ambitious. Now we have another one to drool over, Arroyo.
Arroyo is a project that’s already several years into development and aims to bring Fallout 2 into the modern age of gaming by painstakingly rebuilding the entire thing in Fallout 4’s engine.
And now, for the first time since work started on Arroyo, the developers are showing off the fruits of their efforts by releasing a two-minute trailer dedicated to showing off the remake’s environments, and boy, oh boy, does it look good.
The trailer in question shows off various key Fallout 2 locations like The Sacred Head of the Vault Dweller and the Temple of Trials; all remade in the new engine in real-time 3D with visually striking lighting effects.
What makes me most excited when I look at Arroyo is how visually spectacular Fallout 2 looks with better graphics and lighting effects and the effort the team has taken to keep as much of the same colour tone and feel of the original as possible.
Arroyo manages to look both modern and oh-so-90s at the same time, which is precisely what I would want from a Fallout 2 remake.
And while the trailer focuses mainly on showing off the world, there are a few, albeit brief, shots of the game in motion. For example, we see a player take on some rats armed with a knife and shoot at some mole rats with a Desert Eagle.
We also get to see the player blasting the antennae off a Mantis. However, the trailer never shows the V.A.T.S itself, so we’ll have to wait for another trailer to drop to V.A.T.S in action.
But now I want to hear from you. Are you as excited about Arroyo as I am? Let me know in the comments, and let’s all soak in that 2024 90s goodness together.
