If you couldn’t keep your eyes open until midnight last night to catch the State of Play from PlayStation, don’t worry. We’ve listed everything announced here in a neat list that you can pick and choose from.
Or, if you’d prefer the full State of Play experience, we’ll have it listed right at the very bottom.
Helldivers 2:
The State of Play kicked off with a new trailer for the upcoming Helldivers 2 game. Ready for release on the 8th of February, the trailer shows off a good few of the weapons you’ll get to use to reign utter destruction, as well as a sneak peek at some crazy new rideable mechs.
Stellar Blade:
Set to free the Earth from its new alien inhabitants, Stellar Blade puts you in the shoes of Eve, a member of the 7th Airborne Squad. Accompanied by a thrown-together team and a few survivors from an underground settlement, you’ll hack, slash and parry your way through this beautifully crafted, story-driven action adventure. Some of you may even notice in the deep dive of the game that Eve is stylish in both combat and her wardrobe. Pre-orders open on the 7th of February, and the game’s official launch date is the 26th of April.
Sonic X Shadow: Generations:
Sonic X Shadow Generations was announced for PlayStation 5, and it shows off some killer moves from both Sonic and Shadow in their new 3D adventure. Planned for release in “autumn”, which is probably sometime in September this year, but they completely threw me off by not saying “Fall”.
Zenless Zone Zero:
From the creators of Genshin Impact comes a high-action, combo-busting game from HoyoVerse. While we haven’t gotten any release date just yet, at least this trailer shows the team is still putting in the hours to get this game out to us soon. The game will feature the familiar hero-swapping combat mechanics we see from Genshin Impact but with much more intensity and sass.
Foamstars:
Square Enix’s party shooter Foamstars got an exciting new trailer showing off a good few of the soapy game modes and some of the zany characters, light show maps and stylish skins we can expect when the game launches on the 6th of February.
Dave the Diver:
The not-quite-indie smash-hit Dave the Diver is getting its PlayStation 5 port this year in April, but it’s not coming alone. Something lurks beneath the waters that plans to spice things up a little in Dave’s cosy little world.
V Rising:
Another PC masterpiece making its way over to PlayStation this year is V Rising. Become the Dracula of your dreams in this vampire action survival game that grants you blood-sucking abilities, animalistic transformations and castle-building that would put Extreme Home Makeover to shame. Set to release sometime in 2024.
Silent Hill: The Short Message:
I had to watch this section from between my fingers, but at least I was brave enough to watch it. A short, free-to-download game from Konami in the Silent Hill series is now available to play. You know, in case surviving January wasn’t scary enough.
Silent Hill 2:
Following that already horrific trailer for The Short Message, Konami gave us a glimpse at the Silent Hill 2 remake that is in the works. The trailer features quite a few of the combat mechanics that we can expect to see when fighting four-legs-one-torso or trying to get the right medicine from the nurse.
Judas:
The creators of Bioshock dropped a new story trailer for their upcoming first-person shooter, Judas. The aesthetic feels similar to the older Bioshock games, with that 70s re-imagining of what the future holds. With no release date announced, we’ll just have to keep our eyes, ears and noses on the hunt for more on this one.
Metro Awakening VR:
Coming to PSVR2 in 2024 is Metro Awakening. Working closely with both Deep Silver and Dmitry Glukhovsky, this new game looks to blend perfectly the madness that comes with a Metro game and an epic VR experience.
Legendary Tales:
Keeping to the VR games, up next was the trailer for Legendary Tales. Featuring skeletons, swords, shields and magic, this VR game looks like it’s all about kicking some boney ass. Launching on the 8th of February, if you ever thought you could take on thirteen enemies at once with super-combo-sword-swinging-magic-flinging power, then this is the game for you.
Dragons Dogma 2:
Coming to our console on the 22nd of March is Dragons Dogma 2. The trailer featured in the State of Play this year gave us a taste of the action we can expect during our playthroughs. Quickly switching between two classes for synergistic combos seemed to be the main flavour of the trailer, and to be quite honest, I can’t wait to ice-wall-block directly into a flying sword swing combo myself.
Rise of Ronin:
One of the hottest games everyone is excited about, Rise of Ronin, was given a whole four-minute gameplay trailer. Team Ninja showed off a lot of the combat and movement mechanics we can expect to see in-game, as well as the true-to-era cityscapes and environments. Combining both sword and gunplay, it’s easy to see why everyone can’t wait until the 22nd of March for the game to release.
Until Dawn: Remake:
Yet another trailer that had me thankful I didn’t eat beans last night was the announcement trailer for Until Dawn, the PlayStation 5 remake. Now you can prepare to absolutely poop yourself in better graphics as you try to survive one of the greatest slasher horrors of all time.
Death Stranding 2 On the Beach:
Of course, saving the best for last, PlayStation’s State of Play gave us an amazing 10-minute look at Kojima’s walking simulator sequel, Death Stranding 2. Titled “On the Beach”, this mini-movie provided much of what we can expect from the game. Knowing Kojima, though, this is just a small taste of what the full game will hold for us, when it releases in 2025.
While we might have thought Death Stranding 2 would be the peak of the State of Play, just shortly after the trailer, Kojima and Hulst bragged about a new stealth espionage game that was in the works between PlayStation Studios and Kojima Productions.
Currently titled Physint, as posted by Kojima on his X account, the game will kick into production after the release of Death Stranding 2. This means that we have three titles coming out of Kojima’s studios over the next few years: Physint, Death Stranding 2 and “OD”.
To top all of that off, PlayStation announced that they would be holding a separate State of Play in February for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth.
While I might skip one or two of the horror games coming to our PlayStation console over the next couple of years, I am very excited to get to the rest of the epic games shown off at the State of Play this year.
