Eidos Montreal, the developer of the Deus Ex reboots as well as 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has announced that it has just said goodbye to 97 employees and if a Bloomberg report is to be trusted, along with the layoffs, the plug has also been pulled on an unannounced Deus Ex game the studio was working on.
While Eidos Montreal didn’t mention the Deus Ex project in its announcement, the report from Bloomberg claims that the game had been in development for two years and was about to transition from pre-production to full development sometime this year.
If this is true, game development started after the studio’s acquisition by the Embracer Group in 2022.

The Embracer Group picked up Eidos Montreal as part of its ill-fated spending spree that saw it acquire Square Enix Montreal, which was immediately shut down, and Crystal Dynamics.
Currently, we’re seeing the terrifying human cost that reckless spending by companies like The Embracer Group and Microsoft have caused, and as a result of these layoffs, beloved game series like Deus Ex and gamers are also paying the price of corporate greed.
