When a game as good as Dave the Diver is released, people tend to keep their eyes on the development team, hoping for a sequel or something similar. Mint Rocket, the development team in question, has gone against the grain and decided that their new game will be completely different.
Wakerunners is the title of their next game, and instead of the cosy diving and sushi restaurant running that everyone fell in love with, this game is a high-action, fast-paced hero shooter that you can play with your frenemies.
When asked about the contrasting game genres coming out of the studio by Digital Trends, Director ChaeHyun Lim said
“While I can provide the perspective of the Wakerunners team, I don’t think I can speak for my colleagues working on other projects at Mintrocket. The studio comprises separate dev teams; they are free to work on the projects they are passionate about. The studio can’t be pigeonholed or restricted into one genre. However, we are united by a common goal to create immersive experiences that bring joy to players worldwide. It was exciting that the Wakeruners team worked closely when we created this science fiction world. We want to balance gameplay and combat with enough depth to support casual players who want to join in with friends and common players, [as well as] players with more passionate or competitive inclinations.”
The new game will be experienced from a top-down perspective, similar to popular MOBAS like LoL or Dota 2, and will feature a variety of game modes hosting both 4v4 and 5v5 match-ups. According to the very small amount of public information on the game, it looks like speed management, or perhaps maintenance, will be the key to victory for your team—something like an interesting blend of Ghostrunner and your favourite MOBA.
Either way, the high-octane sci-fi shooter that is Wakerunners seems like something we’ll definitely be giving a bash over at NAG HQ. As for if anyone is any good at it, my bets are placed on “no”.
