Apple Introducing Sideloading In The European Union

In one of the most significant updates to Apple since the iPhone, Apple users in the European Union will soon be able to sideload apps onto their devices.

If you need clarification on sideloading, it’s a way for users to install third-party apps outside the official iOS App Store onto their devices – which is huge for Apple users.

Apple has historically avoided sideloading due to their inability to ensure the quality it can achieve via its storefront.

However, times are changing, and this move is in response to the EU’s antitrust legislation passed last year.

As of writing this, Apple still needs to reveal how it plans to comply with the new legislation. However, according to reports from the likes of Bloomberg, the company is working on releasing an update for EU-based users that will allow sideloading for iPhones and iPads.

Those outside of the EU shouldn’t get excited just yet. According to the same reports, the likely outcome is that Apple will have a different version of the App Store available for EU countries and the rest of the world.

However Apple choose to respond, we’ll see everything play out soon because the deadline for Apple to adhere to the new legislation is the 7th of March, meaning there are only weeks left for the changes to be implemented.
