Golden Sun Rises Again

One of my all-time favourite games is getting a little love from Nintendo this year. From the 17th of January, both Golden Sun and the sequel Golden Sun: The Lost Age will be added to Nintendo Switch Online’s catalogue.

I’m so excited about this news that I literally typed this piece standing instead of sitting at my desk, and no, it’s not one of those fancy stand-up-style desks.

I have the most fond memories of tackling the puzzles and battles of Golden Sun on my royal blue GBA SP, avoiding any sort of social communication with every adult. Once, I was so engrossed in the game that while walking to the car, I tripped over a brick in the paving. The Game Boy went flying. Dramatically, I cried out for the Game Boy, just barely missing the catch as I fell flat onto my face. After all the slow-motion commotion was over, I quickly ran over to make sure that the game had not crashed. Luckily, all was well. Except, of course, for my bloody knees and grazed palms, but that was the least of my concerns.

For those new to the epic tale of Golden Sun, the story takes you through a fantasy world where anti-heroes are plotting to release the chaotic magic “alchemy”. It is your duty to stop the anti-heroes and take your party on this adventure as you meet new NPCs, battle harder and more challenging monsters and tackle mind-boggling puzzles. Acquire stronger spells and mystical Djinns to turn the tide of battle to your favour and fall in love with the well-scripted narrative. If fantasy RPGs like Legends of Dragoon and Final Fantasy are your cup of tea, you must give Golden Sun a playthrough.

If you have similar memories or want to make some just as awesome as mine, then check up on your Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Make sure it’s paid for and active, and then sit there patiently on your couch for the next five days, waiting for Golden Sun to return to our beloved hands.
