Samsung Reveals A Glasses-Free 3D Monitor At CES 2024

Samsung has unveiled an early-stage prototype for a new 2D/3D gaming monitor, essentially the same thing we’ve seen before in devices like the Nintendo 3Ds and the HTC Evo 3D, just on a larger and far more polished scale.

The Samsung 2D/3D Gaming Monitor boasts a 3D mode that doesn’t require glasses and allows users to play VR games without a headset. Most impressively of all is that according to Samsung, it’s compatible with existing VR games and experiences.

What sets this technology apart from the older iterations we’ve seen before is that this monitor has two cameras built-in to track eye and head movement. The eye-tracking technology follows your eye and head movement and adapts the screen accordingly; this is essential to play VR games without requiring a dedicated VR headset.

Samsung also claims that the monitor is compatible with Steam VR and is securing partnerships for 3D gaming content from other notable gaming publishers.

However, this technology is not without its drawbacks. Because the motor needs to track your head to present a clearer 3D effect, you can’t have someone else in the room because the head tracking doesn’t work when more than one head is detected.

The Samsung 2D/3D gaming monitor is early in development, with no release information or pricing available. Still, Samsung promises that more details will be available later in the year.
