Long Live the NUC

Around half a year ago, Intel announced it was pulling the plug on its Intel NUC department. Then, just about a week later, Intel said they would partner with Asus to keep Next Unit of Computing devices from going six feet under.

Fast forward to today, during the early morning hours at CES, Asus showed off its latest ROG NUC, codenamed Scorpion Canyon.

The compact beast of a machine looks very similar to Intel’s NUC 11, with its slim design that can be positioned either horizontally or vertically on a stand.

There will be two flavours available to consumers, the first includes an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H and an Nvidia RTX 4060 discreet GPU. The second, more punchy flavour, comes with an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H and RTX 4070 discreet GPU.

Both support Dual Channel SO-SIMM DDR5 memory, three M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4x4 slots, and Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. With six total USB ports and a Thunderbolt port spread between the front and rear of the chassis, an SD card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, an HDMI 2.1 port and two DP1.4a ports, there’s no sacrificing anything just because of the ROG NUCs compact design.

Asus also promises a tool-less chassis for easy and quick upgrades that should take no longer than ten minutes.

While they have yet to announce any price indication for either of the models, it’s quite likely that it would come with a hefty price tag.
