This past weekend was Blizzcon 2023, which means you’re about to get a whole stack of Diablo and WoW news. Served up in this article is a meaty little hint dropped by Diablo 4 production director Tiffany Wat and associate game director Joe Piepiora in a chat with IGN.
The infamous cow level has been rumoured to exist, and then quickly denied, multiple times since Diablo 4 was released back in June. Still, this small hint, along with some other coincidental gameplay mechanics, is probably the strongest clue we’ll get to find out if the cow level is real.
When asked about the cow level, the two had this to say:
“Did you say Cow Level?” Piepiora joked after we asked about the Cow Level.
“Yeah, Cow Level,” IGN’s Matt Kim responded.
“Sounds udderly ridiculous,” Wat said. “I mean, I think I have heard that a lot of players have been out there slaying cows.”
“Just poor innocent cows in the countryside of Diablo?” Piepiora asked with a smile.
“Poor, innocent cows in Sanctuary,” Wat said. “I mean, Sanctuary is not a good place to be, even as a cow. I will say, however, if people have picked up any items from their cow campaign… cow slay-age campaign… they should hang on to them.”
“I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Piepiora said in response.
Players have also figured out that if you had to slay 666 cows in Sanctuary, you would receive an “Item of Great Significance”. You can obtain only one each week, and if you combine three of them together, you create a key that grants you access to The Forlorn Hovel.
While no one has yet to actually find the cow-level, it does seem like steak is back on the menu, boys!
We were also treated to the official announcement trailer of the upcoming expansion, Vessel of Hatred, expected to launch in late 2024.
