Dungeons and Dragons Reveals Replacement Illustrations After AI Controversy

One of the illustrators for Dungeons and Dragons, one with a pulse, has just revealed their new images that will replace the AI art used in the first print run of Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants.

Released in August, Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants was the subject of much controversy after fans realised that Ilya Shkipin, a long-time Dungeons and Dragons illustrator, had used AI to generate their illustrations in the book.

This was later confirmed and prompted Wizards of the Coast to take a stance against AI artwork and start recommissioning new art to replace the AI-generated images in future print runs.

Now, the first of the replacement art has been showcased by Linda Lithen, a freelance illustrator who has done work on Dungeons and Dragons books like Shadow of the Dragon Queen and Call of the Netherdeep, as well as on Critical Role’s Taldorei Reborn.

The images were shared on Linda’s Twitter. They showcased the new versions of The Frost Giant Ice Shaper and Rime Hulk – two of the monsters previously generated with AI in the book.

The community has been overwhelmingly supportive of Wizards of the Coast following through on its promises to remove the AI art, with many complementing them online for their efforts to fix the problem.

Over the last couple of months, AI has been the subject of much criticism, with some big names like George R. R. Martin going so far as to sue the makers of ChatGPT for copyright infringement.

But now we want to hear from you. What are your thoughts on all this? Do you stand behind AI art, or are you happy to anger the AI overlords by siding with the humans? Let us know in the comments.
