Coming November, The Sony PS5 Slim, now with detachable drive

It looks like the PS5 has been shredding for the beach this summer because we’re going to see the new look PS5 hit US shelves in November.

More than likely going to be called the PS5 Slim, this new model packs all the oomph of the original PS5 but in a 30% smaller body and weighs in 18% or 24% lighter depending on if you have the disc drive attached.

Yup, you read that right; the disc drive is now detachable. You can pick up the Digitial Edition of the New Look PS5, and if you decide you want to add the disc drive at a later stage, you can, because it will also be sold separately.

The bundle option that comes with the disc drive in the box will be sold at the same price as the original PS5 with disc drive, at $499 or around R12,000 at launch in South Africa; however, the digital edition will be slightly more expensive due to the fact that you could add a disc drive at a later stage — $449, $50 more than its launch price. So we will probably see it at around R10,999 in South Africa.

The new look also has a redesigned plate structure, featuring four plates instead of the standard two. The top two plates will be matte, and the bottom two will be glossy. I like the look of the sleek line going down the middle, although we can clearly see it’s been done this way to accommodate the detachable disc drive. More plates does mean more customisable options, though.

We will also be getting a 1TB drive as standard, compared to the 800GB drive the original launched with.

Sony says that the original PS5 will no longer be in production, and the current stock of units in store will be the last. We should see this new model on our shelves a few months after the November release date.

You can check out all the specs on the official blog post from Sony here.
