Nintendo Opening An Official Museum

Nintendo Opening An Official Museum

In one of the more exciting announcements to come out of last week’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the opening of its official museum in Japan – and by doing so, addressed a crucial issue that we’ve covered previously here on NAG, the preservation of old video games.

News of the museum first came out in 2021 when Nintendo spoke about its plans to open one to share product development history and philosophy with the public, and now those plans have come to life.

During the latest Nintendo Direct, the General Manager of the Entertainment Planning & Development Division of Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo would open its museum in Uji-city, Kyoto, and alongside this announcement, released an aerial shot of the building that will be the musea with an iconic Super Mario Bros. box painted on the roof.

The gallery will be called the Nintendo Museum. It will feature various Nintendo products from the company’s history. An opening date for the museum has yet to be confirmed, but they did say that construction is progressing well, and more details will be shared soon.

According to a recent 50-page study, almost nine out of ten video games are in danger of being lost to time, so opening an official Nintendo museum could represent a big step forward to preserve classic games and consoles. If successful, it might push other big gaming companies to do the same.
