It is still sitting fresh in our minds that Volition, the team behind Saints Row and Red Faction, was shut down due to the reckless spending of the Embracer Group.
It looks like Embracer’s restructuring is not stopping there; this time, it’s Gearbox that is on the chopping block.
Gearbox is most commonly known for its Borderlands franchise, so it would be a complete shame if they were forced to close down due to the downfall of The Embracer Group, but luckily, it seems like Gearbox will just be sold off to another company.
Reports say that Embracer is working with Goldman Sachs and Aream & Co. to assist with the sale and that they already have interest from a few third parties.
According to an email that was sent out to Gearbox employees, it’s quite likely that Embracer and Gearbox will be going their own separate ways, but there are still many “options under consideration”.
The email from Dan Hewitt reads: “The base case is that Gearbox remains a part of Embracer… However, there are many options under consideration, including Gearbox’s transfer, taking Gearbox independent, and others. Ultimately, we’ll move ahead with whichever path is best for both Gearbox and Embracer.”
Gearbox is still set to launch Hyper Light Breaker and Homeworld 3 in early 2024. It would be a shame to lose another prolific development team in the gaming industry thanks to Embracers failed partnership with Savvy Games.
