AMD announce FSR3 with Fluid Motion Frame Technology

At Gamescom, AMD announced their long-awaited FSR 3 (Fidelity FX Super Resolution) technology that’s competing with NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 Frame Generation Technology.

True to the original FSR and AMD’s history, FSR3 is usable across a wide variety of hardware devices and across vendors. While there are several aspects to FSR3, the most important is the introduction of frame generation, which is similar to DLSS. This technology uses temporal frame data and motion vectors to generate additional frames, boosting performance visual performance by over 200%.

AMD has clarified that while frame generation is the key technology in FSR3, it also introduces improved image quality for FSR 2 and AMD Anti-Lag+. Anti-Lag + works similar to the competition’s Reflex technology that’s enabled when frame generation is in use. Since frame generation introduces input latency, AMD is relying on Anti-Lag+ to mitigate this, and fortunately, it can work with the current Anti-Lag technology to further reduce input latency.

AMD says that developers will be able to implement FSR3 with minimal effort. The first titles to feature FSR3 will be Immortals of Aveum and Forspoken, with many others to follow, including Crimson Desert, Cyberpunk 2077, Space Marine II and many others.

As stated earlier, a key differentiator for FSR 3 is cross-vendor operability as it works on previous generation RDNA (Radeon RX 5700 series) GPUs, NVIDIA 2000 series GPUs and, of course, AMD-powered consoles.

FSR could be a game changer for AMD and go a long way to alleviating their product weakness in Ray Tracing.

Time will tell how well FSR3 works in both performance and image quality enhancements or even the compromises it will bring with it. Regardless, this is a major victory for AMD.
