An Easter Egg In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Could Have A Ripple Effect Going Forward

With Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse finally being available on digital release now, fans can watch the animated masterpiece in the comfort of their own home and also pick up and dissect many of the easter eggs hidden within – or maybe that’s just a me thing.

The easter egg I want to talk about today concerns a character that many fans who don’t follow the Spider-Man comics only got introduced to in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – Miguel O’Hara, otherwise known as Spider-Man 2099.

The first time moviegoers saw the character, Miguel O’Hara was seen talking to Lyla, who tells Miguel he is about to be the first person to make an autonomous multiverse jump.

Then in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the character returns to the movie as the big evil villain of the story and is shown to be heading up the Spider Society, a collection of Spider-Variants from various Earths in the greater multiverse tasked with maintaining universes’ stabilities.

Each version of Spider-Man has its own cannon event that can never change. When Miles Morales goes against Spider Society’s commands and attempts to flee to his universe to save his father, he changes the loop and, by doing so, destroys Miguel O’Hara’s digital suit – leading many to believe that that was the end of Miguel. Still, thanks to a sneaky Easter Egg, we know that that is not the case.

In a blink-and-you-‘ll-miss-it moment, we see a shot of Miguel’s lab with his iconic Spider-Man 2099’s white suit snuck into the background. As comic book readers will already know, while the blue and red suit is Spider-Man 2099 most recognisable suit, the white version is far superior and way more advanced.

With this Easter Egg revealed, it’s safe to assume we’ve not seen the last of Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 in the films. When he returns, he will undoubtedly be more powerful than ever before.

And if you think I’m reading too much into this one moment, the suit was confirmed to be a deliberate Easter egg in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse digital release when the character designer Kris Anka specifically described the concealed costume as Spider-Man 2099’s white second suit.
