In a recent news post, we wrote about Xbox releasing a pizza-scented accessory for its Xbox controllers so that players could enjoy the drool-worthy scent of pizza while they Cowabunga’d some baddies in TMNT.
Well, it seems like Sony is jumping on the scented bandwagon, as they’ve just filed a patent for a gaming system akin to some sort of smell-o-vision.
The system will most likely work in a similar style to the Pizza scented controller accessory from Xbox, where certain scented cartridges will be put into the device depending on what game you’re playing. The device will then emit different scents as you make your way through various scenes in the game.
Obviously, this is just a patent and quite a lot of the time, patents just remain that, patents, but considering Xbox has an actual product being released along these lines, we may start to see more smelly products enter the gaming scene as other companies cop on to the trend.

I always think adding smells to your entertainment will be a good idea until I imagine walking through some sort of butchery where, instead of fresh meat, it’s 348 dead bodies that have been hanging out for over five months.
On the other hand, getting to smell the forests of Pandora in an Avatar game could be amazing. I guess it’ll just be up to you to decide whether you want to keep your thumbs on the analogue sticks or stuck up your nose to block the incoming smells.
What do you think about adding scents to gaming? Yay, or a hard, smelly nay?
