With the rise of AI being used in creative projects, it was only a matter of time before controversy would undoubtedly follow. Recently Steam issued a statement requiring developers to disclose if any AI is used in their games, and a Metal Gear Solid actor expressed unhappiness about AI used to recreate his voice.
Now Kickstarter has announced a change to its policy that will require future projects to disclose if they will be using AI and, if so, how it will be used. This change in policy leaves the door open for AI use while also attempting to address potential dangers and ethical concerns that could arise.
Kickstarter has been around since 2009, and since then, the crowdfunding platform has helped bring various projects to life, with many indie game and board game developers seeing massive success on the platform.
In a Tweet, Kickstarter addressed their new AI policy with a link to the details. The new policy will go into effect on the 29th of August and will require all new projects to disclose if they will be using AI to develop images, text or any other output.
They will also need to explain where they will be drawing the AI data from, how it will be used and how the rights and privacy of others will be protected.
We’ve been paying attention to the conversation about AI. Today, we’re announcing an AI policy, shaped by feedback from our creators and backers, that directly lays out how we’ll approach Kickstarter projects that involve AI. https://t.co/fYuirSfyOL

Kickstarter emphasised these changes don’t aim to ban projects that use AI but rather ensure that potential backers will be fully informed about the nature of AI in projects, so they can choose what they want to support.
