Death Stranding 2 Will Redefine Strand Says Hideo Kojima

Video game juggernaut Hideo Kojima recently revealed in an interview with Japanese publication Music Natalie that Death Stranding 2 will revisit the meaning of the word Strand, thanks to the Covid pandemic.

When the teaser trailer for Death Stranding 2 premiered last year during the Game Awards, Hideo Kojima revealed he had already begun writing the game’s story long before the pandemic hit. Still, after living through it, he decided to go back and restructure the story.

“At the beginning, there was the theme of “connecting,” and after that, I made a lot of notes about character settings, game ideas, and so on. Like how to connect it. I put it together while maintaining a balance…But I had to rewrite everything because of corona.

In Death Stranding, it was justice to connect, but with the corona crisis, pseudo-connections such as remotes have come to be emphasized. On the other hand, I felt that such pseudo-connections alone would not lead to fulfilling human lives. After all, humans need to go out into the outside world and move.” – Hideo Kojima.

Returning to the script and reevaluating the story meant looking at how people now viewed being connected and completely changing the definition of Strand in the upcoming sequel.

We’ll have to wait and see how Hideo Kojima’s new outlook on Strand will change the core concept behind Death Stranding 2, but if the first game is anything to do by, players are sure to be in for a deep and meaningful experience.

According to Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding 2 will also explore the struggles of returning to life after isolation, and the upcoming Death Stranding movie won’t follow the story told in the game but rather explore something new and completely different.
