Zombie survival has been a genre since 1932 so when games have it at their core they’ve gotta add in a little something something to get us intrigued.
Infection Free Zone has decided to use the real world as its map, allowing players to turn their own home cities into a safe haven for the last survivors on Earth.
The game loop seems to involve the player splitting their survivors into different squads. Some will be responsible for the building and construction on the home turf while others will have to scavenge the surrounding buildings to see what they can find. Of course, these resources won’t last forever and eventually, players will need to build a striving community with farmland and the like to keep their people alive.
The day-night cycle will also come into play as when the sun sets the infected will wake from their slumber and start hoarding towards your base. Whether it survives or not is all up to how you’ve built your defences and what buildings you’ve taken over as elements like line of sight will come into account. Tall buildings seem to be good options when it comes to overall defence.
I’d be super keen to see if I could survive the zombie apocalypse in the middle of JHB, or perhaps use that flat old mountain down in the Western Cape as some sort of natural defence.
There is no release date for the game just yet, but there is a simple demo on Steam that you can play to get an idea of where the game is headed. For now, you can only pick from specific world locations, but the full game plans to allow you to choose from anywhere in the real world.
