Twitter is Becoming ‘X’

Twitter has been in the news quite a lot lately since Tesla billionaire Elon Musk bought it just under a year ago. He’s promised a whole lot of changes to the platform and while some of it has not lived up to expectations we can all admit that Twitter certainly feels a little different.

Threads, Meta’s take on the text-based social media platform also launched just the other day and it’s most definitely put pressure on the Twitter ecosystem. While Twitter still manages to be the bird on the highest branch in the tree, Elon has decided he no longer wants to be a bird at all.

In a tweet posted on Sunday; “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds”, by Elon himself followed by “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make go live worldwide tomorrow”, we can see that the Twitter brand is on its way out and we’re being introduced to “X”.

X plans to be a multimedia platform that doesn’t just focus on text, but video, audio and even payment. The newly announced CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.”.

I’m not sure if this has been the plan all along or if Elon is attempting drastic things to try and get Twitter, or X, back to its former glory.

In any case, we’d better start preparing to share each other’s X accounts and changing our lingo to X-ing and sub-Xs… I can already see this is going to get a little confusing.
