Clippy Heading Back To Windows, Powered By ChatGPT

If you’ve been alive for long enough, then chances are you’re familiar with Microsoft’s original Clippy. This original, intelligent assistant dates back to 1997 before being laid to rest by Microsoft in 2005.

But thanks to software company FireCube, Clippy is about to be resurrected and will be more powerful and intelligent than ever before. Firecube is preparing to introduce its open-source version of Clippy, powered by OpenAI’s Chat GPT.

Because ChatGPT powers it, this isn’t 1997s Clippy and instead, this new and improved version will be able to produce work for you using the same conversational abilities as users have become used to by using penAI’s fledgling Large Language Model.

As of now, Fireblock has said that those planning on using its Chat GPT version of Clippy will need to have a private OpenAI API key – essentially confirming that you’ve subscribed to one of ChatGPT’s paying tiers and allowing Clippy to access OpenAI’s servers for query processing.

The only other requirements are a PC running Windows 10 and an Internet connection. Over time, Firelock plans to develop Clippy further, adding whatever improvements OpenAI embraces and a way to bypass the need for personal OpenAI keys entirely.

What do you think of the return of Clippy? Are you excited for its return, or should Clippy be allowed to fade away in peace? Let us know in the comments.
