The current Microsoft FTC court case is turning out to be highly revealing, with many details about the company’s business plans coming to light. The latest reveal is focused on Windows 11 and its potential subscription-based future.
At the moment, when companies sign up for Windows 365, each user is given their own custom Windows virtual machine hosted in the Windows 365 service. And because Windows 365 is a cloud-based service, each Windows virtual machine can be accessed using a web browser or an app on Windows and Mac devices.
Now Microsoft might also be eyeing these extended capabilities for general users, at least if internal documents made public thanks to the FTC vs Microsoft hearing are to be believed.

During the latest day in court, as the FTC attempts to block Microsoft’s proposed $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, an internal Microsoft presentation entitled Modern Life Strategies and Priorities has been revealed to the public and in this document, Microsoft talks about its goal to serve more than 1.5 billion people daily across its software platforms.
The document in question dates back to June 2022. It revealed that one of Microsoft’s long-term goals is to use the foundation it created with Windows 365 to enable a complete Windows operating system streamed from the cloud to any device. In layman’s terms, Microsoft is likely considering a subscription service for its Windows 11 operating system.
