Another exciting new game announcement to come from last night’s Xbox Games Showcase was South of Midnight. For those who missed the showcase, South of Midnight is the next project from Compulsion Games, the studio behind 2018’s much-loved We Happy Few.
Since Xbox Games Studios acquired Compulsion Games in 2018, not much has come out from the studio other than they were working on a dark fantasy game, a game we’ve now gotten a two-minute trailer for.

The trailer for South of Midnight contradicted Xbox Games’ claim that there would be no CGI trailers at the Xbox Games Showcase. Still, we’ll let it slide because South of Midnight looks excellent, CGI trailer or not.
The game is confirmed to be a third-person action-adventure where players will take on the role of Hazel, who is on a mission to capture supernature creatures that have somehow found a way into her world.
The game’s creative director David Sears described the game during the showcase as an honest love letter to the American South. This setting, David believed, is sorely underrepresented in gaming.
Anyone seen this huge sneaky creature with teeth like knives?!

From what we’ve seen in the trailer, the game has a remarkably Tim Burton-esque stop-motion style of animation, and while there is no word on a release date yet, South of Midnight looks to be a dark fantasy game set in the American South game of our dreams… or nightmares.
