Trading Card Games – Not How I Remember Them

I was initially going to write this story based on how cool the latest one out of one “The One Ring” card is in the new Lord of the Rings x Magic the Gathering crossover, in fact, I thought it was such an excellent idea, being able to essentially own the only card out there, that I hopped on to my usual geek stores web page to pre-order a booster pack or two, just for the thrill of it.

Guys, it’s R10,000 for a box of booster packs. Ten. Thousand. Rand. That’s a PlayStation 5.

While I get that that’s a whole box of packs, the box only contains twelve boosters. That means it’s around R830 a pack. Fine, they are the collector’s booster packs, meaning I will get the fancier foil cards, but still, R830 a pack for a < .00003 chance at nabbing the card I’m after.

I remember when I was younger, you only got one kind of pack, and how lucky you were depended on how many Irish Jigs you did that morning. If I got a secret-rare, super-foil, misprint, then that was my luck, if I got nothing but duds, well, then I bought another pack.

Card collecting is not the kid’s hobby I remember.

While the idea of owning The One Ring tickles my fancy, I’m not brave enough to drop hundreds of thousands of Rands in trying my luck to find it. Put the card in a regular old booster pack that anyone can purchase. Give us all the hope of getting invited to the chocolate factory, not just Logan Paul or Drake.

With my hopes dashed, I suppose the best I can do is just watch the reveal video of the new LotR cards; while still exceptionally cool, the bad taste of putting the rarest card out of reach has knocked the stars from my eyes.
