If you haven’t heard about it, you’re probably still sleeping in a coffin, V-Rising is a game about the return of the almighty Vampire. Once mighty rulers of the land, they are now weak and forced to eat upon rats, albeit burger-flavoured. You work your way back up the food chain to become the again-feared monarch sitting upon their throne.
The game combines ARPG with survival and mixes in a healthy dose of building. As a low-level vampire, you start off with weapons made of bone and cloth scraps to keep you warm at night, but you slowly work your way to better equipment by harvesting wood, stone and other elements from around you.
The Stunlock team have managed to find a great balance between the survival and the fighting elements, and the game makes for an excellent clan experience where you take on the world with your vampire besties.
Most recently, a year after the base game was released into Early Access, the Stunlock team gave us the first major DLC for the game, Gloomrot. The Gloomrot DLC adds a heck-tonne of new content to the game, a new biome but most of all, it allowed vampires to get more castley with their castles. Finally, we were able to build floors above ground level.
The NAG team decided these impressive castles would be a fantastic place to host team pow-wows and strategic meetings for the magazine. We’ve had so much fun in-game that we just had to chat with the Stunlock team and find out what makes them tick and why V-Rising is as good as it is.
I managed to steal a couple of hours from the Stunlock Community Manager, Jeremy Fielding. I say a couple because, as luck would have it, our first attempt at a chat was riddled with internet issues, and I could barely hear a word, but I did manage to put a face to the name. Our second attempt went swimmingly, and Jeremy and I had an awesome chat about Stunlock Studios and their killer vampire game.
Stunlock Studios is a small game development studio from Skövde in Sweden. They’ve been around for almost 14 years or so now, and, as you’ll find out in the interview, they’ve made more than just V-Rising.

Now, I’m not going to spill all the beans, but if you’ve been wondering why rats are so prolific in V-Rising, then you’re just going to have to watch the interview for yourself.
