Can you believe it? It’s almost time for Diablo 4 to release officially and for my bank account to softy cry itself to sleep. I’ve spoken before about how Blizzard is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to releasing inside information about Diablo 4 to keep fans happy. Now, to the surprise of no one, they’ve gone and done it again.
In the early hours of this morning, while you were peacefully sleeping, Blizzard was getting ready to drop some bombs about how monetisation will work in Diablo 4 and debuting the new technology that will be adjusting the in-game shop to each player’s personal taste. What a time to be alive.
While the excitement surrounding Diablo 4 online has been palpable, there have been those who have been justifiably anxious and apprehensive about how the game would be handling microtransactions and things like the promised battle pass system, especially considering the controversies surrounding games like Diablo Immortal and Overwatch 2.
However, we now know that the in-game microtransactions shop in Diablo 4 will feature Platinum as its premium currency, allowing players to purchase cosmetics unique to each of the five classes bundled with the game as launch.
According to Blizzard, these cosmetics will constantly be rotating in and out, and there will also be a battle pass system with Standard, Premium, and Accelerated options. The battle pass will only be able to be purchased using Platinum, and nothing included will be considered pay-to-win.
Where this gets exciting, though, is that Diablo 4’s in-game store will have an intelligence system and will be gathering information while players play their favourite class and the aesthetic they most gravitate towards.
The store would then deconstruct this data to suggest purchases to players. This is a good idea because Diablo’s in-game store will essentially use the same real-world marketing that many online companies do, and it is a surefire way for them to increase their revenue.
Diablo 4 will release on the 6th of June for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
