Game Freak is the name of a game development studio that has become synonymous with Pokémon, having worked on many of the beloved titles over the years. To mix things up, the studio has announced that they are hard at work on something about as far removed from Pokemon as it comes. They are working on a Samurai game.
This upcoming game won’t be the work of Game Freak alone; the studio will work alongside Private Division, the video game publisher behind The Outer Worlds and Hades, to help bring this project to life.
For those who might not know, back in the 1980s, Game Freak was a popular video game magazine. By 1990, they had transitioned into the game studio many know and love today. In 2019, Game Freak announced they wanted to prioritise original games to help grow the experience of their staff. Since that announcement, they have worked on and produced: Giga Wrecker, Little Town Hero, and Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On.
The Samurai game that Game Freak and Private Division are collaborating on is currently known only as Project Bloom. So far, we know that it will be an action-adventure game. Besides one concept image listed in the header for this post, little else is known about the upcoming title. Still, both Game Freak and Private Division promise the game will be an ambitious and exciting new IP for both studios.
We have yet to determine what platforms the game is being developed for. For now, all we know is that Project Bloom is in early development, and its release can be expected between April 2025 and March 2026.
