In today’s dose of exciting news, Sony, one of the other companies Microsoft doesn’t seem able to buy, is working on a set of new PlayStation VR 2 games. On its own, this is barely news, as with the recent release of the PS VR 2, new games are to be expected.
However, the games that Sony is supposedly working on don’t require controllers to play, at least according to a new patent filed by Sony.
The newest version of VR for Sony, the PlayStation VR 2 released in February/March; depending on where you are in the world and alongside the hardware, a diverse and exciting lineup of games was also released. Despite the PS VR 2 being a fantastic piece of technology and the games taking advantage of it, Sony has been moving fewer headsets than the original VR released for the PlayStation 4.
But none of this is getting Sony down, and they are actively pushing their VR headset. Now it looks like players will soon be able to use that headset without the need for controllers – a bold ad impressive move from the side of Sony.
The patent depicts a VR user making hand gestures to perform actions, which are then captured by a built-in VR 2 camera. According to information from the patent, the camera will capture sensor data from the user and the hand gestures before relaying the information to the game or application to perform the intended action. The patent also revealed that PlayStation VR 2 users would end up with their own VR profile based on the gestures and actions the headset’s camera sensed over time.
This proposed method of capture would allow for the use of accurate and personalized VR controls. If Sony manages to pull this off, it would be an impressive move forward for at-home VR. It would also cut costs for Sony as they wouldn’t need to bundle the headset with controllers and could rather market them as optional extras.
