Over the last couple of years, there has been a substantial push by Sony to see many of its beloved IPs be made available to a broader audience, either by allowing the games to leave Sony’s platform or by adapting them for TV and film under the banner of PlayStation Productions.
The first of these adaptions was the highly successful movie adaptation of Uncharted, and more recently, we had the record-breaking The Last of Us TV series.
Now PlayStation Productions has given us a small glimpse into the future by confirming that ten projects are currently in development, and two are seemingly right around the corner.
In the most recent episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast, Head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash spoke about these upcoming projects and said this:
“We’ve got 10 projects in various stages of development, which is really exciting – film and television, little bit of animation as well. What’s really exciting to me is the diversity of the stories we’ve got.”
We’ve got you covered if you’re looking for information about these confirmed projects. Here are all the PlayStation Productions, Movies, and TV Shows that have been announced:
Ghost of Tsushima
In what will undoubtedly be a stunning adaptation, Ghost of Tsushima is currently in the works to be a live-action movie based on the open-world game.
Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, is tied to the project. Still, other than that, we have yet to receive any tangible information surrounding casting or an estimated release date for the project.
Gran Turismo
In a move that absolutely nobody asked for, there is currently a live-action movie adaptation of Gran Turismo in the works that Neill Blomkamp is directing.
This is a strange one considering it’s not the type of project Neill Blomkamp is known for. It’s also not like the games contain any story, but the movie is coming, and it’s coming soon with a release date of 11 August 2023.
Days Gone
One of the more exciting projects currently in its casting phases is a movie adaption of Days Gone, the 2019 open-world zombie game.
While no firm details have yet been announced, it’s reported that Sam Heughan will play Deacon St. John. However, that remains to be confirmed, as is the project’s estimated release date.
Gravity Rush
Gravity Rush has been announced to receive a full-length movie adaptation that PlayStation Productions will produce alongside Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free Productions.
There isn’t much information about it to go on. Still, word on the internet is that this will be a fully animated project as the head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, said they were working on an animated project, and this is the only one it could be.
God of War
Nothing is really known about the Amazon adaptation of God of War other than that it’s in the works and will be a TV series based on the newer God of War games. Casting has yet to be announced, and the project doesn’t have a director attached to it yet.
Horizon
Guerrilla Games has tied in with Netflix to bring out a series based on the Horizon games, Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.
Much like with God of War, we don’t know anything about it yet other than that it will be a live-action adaptation, but if it’s anything as good as The Last of Us adaption was, then we have a lot to look forward to.
Twisted Metal
Set to air on Peacock sometime in 2023. The live-action Twisted Metal adaptation will be a TV Show based on the classic video game many of us spent far too many hours playing throughout our childhood.
The show has Anthony Mackie as John Doe, Stephanie Beatriz, and Will Arnett, attached with the latter voicing the franchise’s villain, Sweet Tooth.
Alongside these confirmed movies and TV shows, it’s safe to assume that the sequel to the Uncharted film is still in the works and the second season of The Last of Us.
