Gary Bowser is, or more accurately was, a member of a hacking group that targeted Nintendo devices and enabled users to play ROM games on the Nintendo Switch and 3DS. He was sentenced in February 2022 to 40 months in prison.
However, Gary has now been released from prison early, but he’s not exactly free – in fact, he is far from it. Before being caught, Gary Bowser was a member of Team-Xecuter.
Now that Gary is out of prison, he must start to fulfil the other part of his sentence: paying Nintendo $14.5 million in damages, of which a $10 million payment to Nintendo is considered the priority.
Records show that Gary has paid $175 of this out of wages earned while in prison. Now that he is released, Nintendo will garnish anywhere from 25-30% of his future wages, the first of which will be taken within the next six months.
To ultimately settle his debt with Nintendo, Gary would need to earn a minimum of $40 million before taxes and considering that he is currently 53 years old, it is improbable that the entire debt will ever be settled. Instead, Gary will likely be paying for the rest of his life.
During Gary Bowser’s sentencing trial, the lawyer representing Nintendo called this sentencing a unique opportunity to send a strong message about piracy.
