Ah, Pokemon cards, every 90s kid’s original entry into geek-hood. Well, maybe not every kid, but at least 98.6% of us, right? Even so, Pokemon have been bringing out cards and collections ever since, and, although I no longer collect (or have any cards, thanks, lil’ bro for doing whatever you did with them) the cards, I do still enjoy watching other people open up new packs in the hunt for the rarest of the rare.
In its latest Limited Edition Collection, Pokemon has teamed up with minimalist artist Yu Nagaba, known for their work on a previous generation Pikachu card, or more popularly perhaps, their work in Ed Sheerans Celstial music video.
Nagaba has created a line of Eeveelution cards for us and a few other items to go along with them. A box set includes 64 card sleeves, a deck box, a rubber playmat and a card box going for 4800 Yen (+-R650). There is a card binder going for 1980 Yen (+-R270) and a card frame for those who want to put their cards up on display going for 1490 Yen (+-R200). All items feature Nagabas minimalist artwork of the Eeveelutions.
There are a few hiccups with the whole thing for any local collectors, though, the biggest one being these items will only be sold in Japan via a lottery system. First off, Japan is a little far, and secondly, the lotto system means there’s only a small chance you’ll actually get the item. From then on, for every 1000 Yen you spend at a Pokemon Center, or on the online store that features a Pokemon product, you will receive one random Eeveelution promo card.
This sounds like the perfect opportunity to create some super-rare cards. So if you are an avid collector, I’d be phoning my Japanese friends, like, yesterday.
