And just like that, Warcraft has been unceremoniously kicked from its throne only to have Mario take its place. With almost $678 million earned so far, The Super Mario Bros Movie is officially the highest-grossing videogame movie adaptation ever.
It is also the highest-grossing movie of 2023, but that is neither here nor there. The Super Mario Bros Movie also didn’t snatch the title from Warcraft on a technicality or by a thin margin. Instead, it overtook Warcraft by well over $200 million, and its theatrical run is still ongoing.
Surprisingly considering the film’s financial success, critics or viewers have not received it particularly well, with the movie holding a measly 58% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, much of the film’s success can be attributed to the sheer amount of promotion and awareness that Nintendo created surrounding the movie, ensuring that on release, droves of fans would flock to the cinema to see how the film about everyone’s favourite plumber would fare.
