As we creep closer to Stranger Things’ final episodes, few fans are ready to wave goodbye to the series. Much like a good Dungeons & Dragons campaign, we’ve bonded with the characters and the world, making today’s announcement by Netflix much more exciting.
According to a brief, and I mean brief, statement from the streaming giant, The Stranger Things universe will expand into a brand new entry – an animated series set within the Duffer Brothers’ world.
We know very little about this upcoming project besides that it is currently in development at Flying Bark Productions with executive producer Eric Robles. Netflix also confirmed that Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer would serve as executive producers through Upside Down Pictures, with contributions from Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen through 21 Laps.
To coincide with Netflix’s announcement, the Duffer Brothers released a statement calling the animated series a homage to Saturday morning cartoons.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realised has been absolutely thrilling,” the statement reads. “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
