As everyone knows, Saturday marked the first day of April, also lovingly and annoyingly known as April fool’s day. This year was light on the jokes, but one stood out for me, so I’m covering it today.
On Saturday, Sega announced the surprise release of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog on Steam. While it was meant to be a funny joke, the game is real and free to download and enjoy.
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a visual novel point-and-click adventure on Amy’s birthday, where she hosts a murder mystery party for all her friends aboard the Mirage Express. Sonic becomes the game’s victim; from there, it’s up to you, the player, to get to the bottom of things.
Players will spend time interrogating their favourite Sonic characters as they figure out what’s happened to everyone’s favourite ring-obsessed hedgehog. The game was announced on the official Sonic Twitter account.
Happy April Fool's Day (observed)!
Except it's real.https://t.co/eJffYnsefb
Enjoy!

The team has been working on this joke for a while, having teased earlier last month that they would take Sonic in a new direction.
For those wanting to experience the game for themselves, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is available to download right now for free from Steam.
