Epic Gave Away 700 Million Free Games Last Year, And Isn’t Stopping Anytime Soon

Epic Games has become sort of like the Santa Clause or Oprah of the gaming world. You get a free game, and you get a free game – everyone is getting a free game! However, it’s hard to comprehend just how many free games the company has handed out in 2022 alone.

This morning Epic Game Store posted its annual year-in-review stats and within it promised that the weekly Free Game Program that the company is so well known for will continue throughout 2023. When Epic Games first started handing out free games back in 2018 I don’t think anyone could have anticipated that it would still be ongoing.

The review also included some numbers about last year’s free games. For example, players who had redeemed all 99 games that were handed out throughout 2022 would have received a total of R41420 in free games. On top of this Epic also revealed that close to 700 million free games were redeemed during the previous year.

Those numbers aren’t just people redeeming the games and not playing them either. Epic detailed that 70 out of the 99 games that were given away went to break their concurrent player records. Epic also revealed that there are now over 230 million Epic Games Store PC users with the number reaching 723 million if cross-platform accounts are taken into account.

In 2022, Epic reached a milestone of having 34.3 million active daily users and 68 million monthly users. As for the company’s plan for the year ahead, in the report, they stated that they plan to improve performance for users as well as work on new features like support for services like EA Play.

However, perhaps the most surprising information to come out of the report is that Epic has officially released its self-publishing tools which will allow anyone to pay R1849 to have their game submitted to the Epic Games Store.
