Activision Blizzard is again referring to the 2023 release of Call of Duty as a “full annual premium release.” However, this terminology has sparked confusion amongst fans of the franchise. The publisher’s latest financial report mentions that its teams are working on live services for the fourth quarter, including the series’s next full annual premium release.
Over the past year, the term “full annual premium release” has been a source of dispute. There were rumours in February 2022 that Call of Duty might skip its annual premium release in 2023. Activision responded by saying that multiple Call of Duty experiences were in development.
Still, according to reports from October last year, the Call of Duty’s 2023 release would instead be an expansion on the recently released Modern Warfare 2. A month later, Activision seemed to respond to this in its financial report by calling the 2023 release a full premium release.
However, speculation persists that there will be a significant addition to Modern Warfare 2 this year. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier speculated that this expansion might be developed to the point of being launched as a separate game.
Let me make this super clear:
– The next game, by Treyarch, is coming out in 2024
– Next year there will be a Modern Warfare II “premium” (paid) expansion by Sledgehammer
– It’s supposed to have lots of content! Maybe that’s why they call it a “full” release. But it’s more MWII https://t.co/jXKAiMFcTf— Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier) November 7, 2022
Activision’s repeated use of the term “full annual premium release” attempts to clarify what the next Call of Duty game will be. However, it remains to be seen what they mean by the term.
