The State Of Call of Duty In 2023

It’s been quite a week for Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard Modern Warfare 2, which just became the fastest Call of Duty game to cross the $1 billion sold mark, and yesterday, the game recorded its one billionth match played.

This morning, Activision Blizzard spoke about the annualised Call of Duty franchise’s future using its Q3 2022 earnings results. From this, we know that Activision Blizzard plans for premium content for the new year. After this hit the internet, there has been much confusion on whether this means a brand new game is in for works or just additional content for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier went on Twitter to explain that the premium content Activision Blizzard is talking about will likely be a continuation of Modern Warfare II. Jason Schreier also spoke about the upcoming Call of Duty timeline. According to Jason, the new year will see Modern Warfare 2 premium expansion. Then in 2024, fans should see the next entry into the franchise.

There is a lot of merit to this, as we already know that while Call of Duty 2023 has not been delayed, it has definitely been delayed. For months Activision has said that the game is definitely on schedule. Still, from everything we’ve seen, it’s more likely that the company will take a year to focus exclusively on Modern Warfare 2 before moving on to the next title.

Activision Blizzard has also seen a significant drop in revenue since last year, and in this case, the word significant refers to a $300 million difference. Activision Blizzard explained that the lower financial performance was due to reduced engagement for Call of Duty following the weaker reception for last year’s premium release. That is another reason why the company will probably not rush into another release so soon after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
