In somewhat exciting but definitely disappointing news, the game that many Square Enix fans thought would be the rejuvenation of Parasite Eve, after a decade, turned out not even to be a game at all. Last month Square Enix filed a trademark for the term “symbiogenesis,” and from that name alone, many presumed that Square Enix was finally returning to the beloved action-RPG series.
However, as a Tweet would reveal, that wasn’t the case. Instead, we know Symbiogenesis is the game publisher’s first digital collectable art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans. So basically, it’s an NFT. Symbiogenesis promises collectable digital art paired with an interactive story.

So far, we know Symbiogenesis will arrive in Spring 2023 alongside a free browser service. According to Square Enix: “Symbiogenesis is brand-new entertainment content set in a self-contained world where a wide cast of characters symbiosis, all of which can be collected as digital art; an interactive story and a dedicated community. The art can be used for social media profile pictures and as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can’ untangle’ a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources. With each strategic move players make, more of the story unfolds.”
As of now, further details are scarce, and interested readers will probably have to wait until just before the launch for more information to emerge.
