AMD announces RX 7900 XT and XTX GPUs with RDNA 3

It was AMD’s turn this week to showcase their next-generation graphics cards which will compete with the recently released NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4000 series. AMD announced two cards, the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, which will be available on December 13 for $999 (around R18,200) and $899 (around R16,400), respectively. There is no information yet on exact local pricing, but you can expect those figures to increase once they reach our shores.

While both cards are designed for 4K, high frame rate, high-quality gaming and streaming, AMD bills the RX 7900 XTX as an 8K gaming GPU. An upcoming Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 8K widescreen monitor, which will be officially announced at CES in January was teased at the event by AMD to demonstrate that 8K is really on the way.

The flagship RX 7900 XTX will also see a significant increase in fps performance while playing AAA titles at 4K. With AMD claiming Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2 and Hitman 3 are all getting over 60fps on ultra-settings.

AMD has also announced that high-resolution DisplayPort 2.1 monitors will be available from Dell, Asus, LG, Acer, and Samsung beginning in early 2023. DP 2.1 works in tandem with AMD’s new Radiance Display Engine, which also supports simultaneous 8K/60p HEVC encoding and decoding, AV1 encode acceleration, and AI-enhanced encoding via dedicated AI acceleration silicon.

These new cards will be the first to be powered by AMD’s new RDNA 3 architecture, meaning they use a similar chipset design to the company’s Ryzen processors. AMD claims up to a 54 per cent jump in performance-per-watt compared to RDNA 2.

With the release of AMD’s new flagship GPUs next month, we won’t have to wait long to see how they compare to the NVIDIA RTX 4000 series GPUs.
