In case you were wondering if the Call of Duty franchise was getting a little dusty, clearly, it’s not. The latest addition to the beloved franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, had the best opening weekend for the franchise, raking in a mind-blowing $800 million in its first three days.
To put this in perspective, not only was this massive for the franchise, but this opening weekend revenue competed with and surpassed two of this year’s biggest film debuts, Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Combined.
Even more mind-numbing than these figures is that this isn’t even the biggest video game release the world has seen. Back in 2013, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V pulled on over $1 billion over its release weekend. So much for playing outside, kids.

“Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest-grossing entertainment opening of the year. It is our honour and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world,” Call of Duty GM Johanna Faries said. “As amazing as this opening has been, Call of Duty has much more in store. An unprecedented level of support for the modern Warfare universe is on the horizon, and Warzone 2.0’s launch is right around the corner. It’s an incredible time for the franchise.”
This isn’t the only exciting news to have come out about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II this week. Yesterday we covered the awesomely cool Burger King X Call of Duty collaboration which you can read about here.
